Q: Is fever dangerous?
Ans: At 107 degrees- yes.
Fever is a symptom like a runny nose. it is the hypothalamus in the brain (thermostat) that is reset because of an infection (whether viral or bacterial). Each persons body will react differently. Some children run high fevers and others low fevers. It is not how high the fever is but how the child is acting.
Children can be alert and drinking and acting fine with high fevers . They can also be subdued, quiet, and not feeling well. Bring the fever down and see how they perk up. If they do not then make an appt to be seen.
With fevers over 102 many children will have rapid heart rates and will breathe fast (they are HOT). Bring the fever down and the breathing and heart rate calm down too.
Treatments for fever include:
- Homeopathic belladonna (or other appropriate remedies based on the history)
- Motrin
- Tylenol
- Open Air tea
- Tepid baths
- We no longer use alcohol baths as the alcohol is easily absorbed into the bloodstream when the skin is hot)
It is helpful for your child t be seen whenever you have concerns about fever. Most fevers will run their course in a few days. If fever is still present at 5-7 days after onset, it is a good idea to be seen.
Some illnesses like Roseola will present with fevers up to 106 on and off for three days. In Roseola the fever lasts three days and then breaks and there is a rash that develops AFTER the fever. Children are contagious during the fever and not with the rash.
there are any causes of fever- teething, viruses, bacteria…monitor your child’s behavior, be sure they are getting fluids and do not worry if during fever the child is not hungry.(STARVE A FEVER FEED A COLD).
This is basic fever information. When you have questions or concerns, call your pediatricians office and be seen if you are worried.
