ASK DR FRANZ

Q:  Should I get vit K wen my baby is born?

Ans: That is a good question. It is a personal choice. In all my years of practice I have not had an issue with it in any newborn. It is not a vaccine- it is a vitamin shot and ot prevents spontaneous bleeding when the clotting mechanism is not fully developed in the first week of life.

Many children also so well without it.

If you have a boy and want him circumcised, most physicians will not do it without the vitamin K shot.

I tell parents- follow your instincts! They are never wrong and whether you do vitamin K  or not, it will be a fine choice.

Thanks for asking. We love helping improve the health of your family.
