ASK DR FRANZ

Q: My son is 3 and drools excessively. He seems to be on target with his speech and developmental goals but I can’t stop the drooling. What could be the cause?

Ans: there could be several causes. And I do  have many more questions. Is he vaccinated? Did he breast feed? for How long? Has his physical development been ok? This is best answered in a visit where more details can be ascertained.

I googled this- and was happy it matched what I would say…I  just like to know what Dr Google says on some subjects. LOL Poor oral motor function – use of tongue, cheek muscles, swallowing muscles would be #1 to investigate. This  can be affected by many things including a hard birth. Craniosactral therapy would be my first recommendation (after a good evaluation).

  • Excessive drooling is not normal in the older, healthy child.
  • Causes may be linked with poor mouth and tongue control.
  • It is important to rule out any serious conditions that may be causing the drooling.
  • Non-surgical treatment may include improving posture, orthodontics, reducing nose blockage, or certain medications
